CAM-POST® Optimization
Tools
 The CAM-POST
wizard guides you step by step on the creation of a post.
Increase
Productivity... Imagine having a
powerful NEW graphical user interface tool, which allows users with all levels
of expertise to accurately create an unlimited number of NC post-processors in
record time.
Ease of
Use... Simple to use, The Wizard is
designed to save you time and money; it eliminates numerous questions, by
replacing them with a unique graphic representation. By following the simple
point and click steps you can easily define machine kinematics, registers and
more, to generate a post in minutes, instead of hours.
Stay Ahead of the
Competition... As
technology changes it will be even more important to be both cost and time
effective. The Wizard will evolve and develop with technology to reflect your
changing manufacturing needs.
Your Total NC
Post-Processing Solution... CAM-POST also has options like High Speed
Machining, NURBS Fitting, Tangential Arc Fitting and a number of other advanced
technologies designed to make your NC machines run faster, smoother, and
smarter.
Emulate, simulate and support HSM functions on most
CNC controls and machines.
Increase
Productivity... Imagine getting
dramatic productivity increases from your current NC machines - without
expensive retrofitting or even changing your CNC control. It’s now possible with
the CAM-POST 2001 High Speed Machining (HSM) module.
With CAM-POST
HSM. With the HSM module you can
generate tremendous competitive advantages in product quality, production cost,
and cycle time. CAM-POST 2001 uses the same "look ahead" algorithms to
control feed rates as CNC machine control manufacturers use.
Works on Any
Control... If you already have HSM
controls, CAM-POST 2001 will support all of them. CAM-POST includes
an HSM section in Quest (the CAM-POST expert system), where you can describe
your HSM control features. CAM-POST will then generate tape codes to support
your HSM control, and even simulate average tool velocity and machining time
based on the information you give it.
Without
Retrofitting. On controls not
equipped for HSM, CAM-POST 2001 still lets you reap the benefits of
high speed feed rate control without expensive retrofitting. Simply provide
control parameters and/or overshoot tables, and CAM-POST will use this
information to emulate HSM "look ahead" functionality.
Your Total NC
Post-Processing Solution. CAM-POST
2001 also includes options like NURBS fitting, Tangential Arc fitting,
The Wizard and a number of other advanced technologies designed to make your NC
machines run faster, smoother, and smarter. To find out how you can benefit from
HSM, NURBS, Tangential Arc fitting, The Wizard or any other CAM-POST features,
 Machine smoother,
more accurate parts in less time with CAM-POST NURBS. -If your company is looking for ways to machine smoother,
more accurate parts in significantly less time, then ICAM’s CAM-POST
2001 NURBS fitting module is the answer. Matched with a CNC control that supports NURBS
output formats, CAM-POST NURBS fitting is capable of defining continuous curve
segments with as little as one-quarter the program data compared to linear
programming. This data reduction translates into much higher feed rates - up to
four times faster than under conventional methods. NURBS fitting not only saves
time, preserves tools, and reduces machine wear; it produces better parts -
much better!
Features of NURBS
Fitting
CAM-POST NURBS fitting
now supports 4 curve output formats:
- Bezier (new) - supported by Heidenhain controls.
- NURBS (new) - supported by Fanuc and Siemens controls.
- Polynomial - supported by Philips controls and can also be used on Siemens
controls.
- Spline - supported by the NUM control and can also be used on Fanuc
controls.
Benefits of NURBS
Fitting
- Higher feed rates: Larger interpolation
blocks increase feed rates so you can machine faster.
- Greater machining accuracy: Arc tolerances
can be greatly reduced to create more accurate parts with no increase in program
size.
- Smoother surfaces: Traditional
point-to-point machining creates feed "stutter" as the tool changes direction
after each individual cut. NURBS fitting eliminates this problem by defining the
entire curve as one continuous smooth cut.
- No need to upgrade your CAM system: NURBS
fitting works with all major CAM systems.

Replace point-to-point tool paths with arcs to improve
part finish and reduce program size. -Improve part finish, dramatically reduce tape size, and
prolong the life of your machine tools with CAM-POST's Tangential Arc Fitting
module.
Arc fitting enables you to increase the feed rate of
your NC machines and improve cutting accuracy by replacing point-to-point tool
paths with arcs. Since one arc represents curved surfaces more accurately than
many linear points, arc fitting can reduce NC tape file length by up to 90%
while improving overall machining tolerances.
Tangential arc fitting takes this process a step further by
ensuring that the arcs fit together so seamlessly that the NC machine "sees" one
continuous tool path and is able to cut parts more accurately. The resulting
smoother tool paths will also help to extend the life of your NC machines and
cutting tools.
Benefits of Arc
Fitting Compared with Linear Interpolation
- Shorter NC tape files: Arc fitting can
reduce NC tape files to as little as one-tenth the size of a file generated
using linear interpolation.
- Smoother, more accurate tool paths:
Fitting arcs to the tool path will eliminate almost all the chordal deviation
caused by the straight-line approximation of the original surface, resulting in
smoother, more accurate tool paths.
- Higher feed rates: Larger interpolation
blocks allow you to increase feed rates while virtually eliminating data
starvation and stutter step.
- No Need to Upgrade your CAM system:
Tangential Arc Fitting option works with all major CAM
systems.
Benefits of
Tangential Arc Fitting Compared with Standard Arc Fitting
- Greater machining accuracy: Tangential arc
fitting provides a better "fit" between arcs for smoother tool paths.
- Extends NC machine tool life: Smoother
tool paths put less strain on machine tools resulting in extended tool
life.
The average
cut method will produce slightly flatter arcs than the overcut method.
In either
case, arcs will never deviate by more than the allowable tolerance from the
original point-to-point motions (P1, P2, P3) being replaced. Both the starting
and ending points of the circle are always points, which exist in the CL file.
